The QPA has stepped up its focus on carbon reduction through the release of its statement of intent at Showcase 2007.

The quarrying industry has made much progress in recent years to improve its sustainability:

  • We have worked to reduce adverse impacts such as noise and dust.
  • We have worked to generate positive impacts such as greater biodiversity through site restoration.
  • The UK aggregates sector has the best recycling record in Europe by a significant margin.
  • QPA members have cut reportable injuries by two thirds since 1999.
  • We have supplied the materials which have enabled improvements to our buildings and infrastructure, and therefore to our standards of living and quality of life.

We know we have further improvements to make in these areas, and as the QPA we want to help and support our members in this objective. However, one area in which we acknowledge that we now need a greater focus is in helping the sector to reduce carbon emissions.

To do this, the QPA has launched its Carbon Reduction Statement of Intent. You can download the full statement in detail here. The statement outlines a series of actions that the QPA will take to support its members:

  • Ensure members understand the data, the terminology, the objectives. The carbon card is the start of that process.
  • Work to better understand our carbon footprint, and the impact of all of our activities.
  • Identify and prioritise key areas for industry action.
  • Seek to make best use of all available resources - for example we believe the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund should have a key role in supporting future carbon reduction in the sector.
  • Work with our stakeholders to identify potential for joint action on carbon reduction. This may well highlight policy conflicts and difficult issues which we will need to confront and work through.
  • We will use future showcases, and other initiatives such as our sustainable development reporting, to report on progress

The QPA's work on carbon reduction will evolve as we work more closely with our members on the initiative, and will update on our progress through our sustainable development reporting.
